Ignition (The Roots)

Hello and name is Quintin Belcher. I’m from Houston Texas, and I am a freshman at University of the Pacific with a major in Graphic Design. The reason why I chose Graphic Design was because of my interest in playing with Photoshop on the computer, and I love to take photos and edit them as well. I also took a Graphic Design class back when I was junior in high school, so that’s the base of how I became interested in this major.

I also have a passion for cars. When I see a rare or exotic car, I go crazy. I dream of how it could be mine, where I can find them, and read about them in car culture magazines, like Speedhunters. If I had to have a favorite car, it would be the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. It’s also my dream car, but knowing today, they are often sold in Japan and in the UK, so it’s extremely hard to see or find one in the United States. I would say my love for cars came from video games like Need For Speed and Gran Turismo. I have always been interested in cars ever since. I’ve also dreamed of becoming a mechanic one day and having my own shop. To add more to my passion, I enjoy customizing them. Yeah, you want to have a fast car, but you have to look good in my opinion! There are so many aftermarket companies that make bodykits, rims, and even decals for cars. To name a few, Rocket Bunny, Liberty Walk Performance, and GarageMak. They even have their own poster car!

Back to the topic, me. After my four years here at Pacific, I hope to get a job as a graphic designer for a big company in Silicon Valley, and I wish to move to San Francisco as well. My hobbies include taking photos and editing them through my phone, relaxing, playing video games, listen to music, and sleep. What I like to do in my free time is to try and get some of my schoolwork done, relax in my dorm, hang out with friends, and I like to go on long walks sometimes to clear my head or just to listen to my music. Some goals I have set for myself are to pass all my classes with high grade, join different organizations and clubs throughout the year, improve my physical fitness, and most importantly, get involved. Overall, I want to start a new life here, make new friends, and try my best to succeed.

Enough with the basics. Let’s take a step back into my high school life. I became really interested in JROTC (Junior Reserves Officers Training Corps). It was a leadership class that used military styles, and I really enjoyed it. As I progressed through high school, I rose through the ranks. At the end of freshman year, I was awarded with the, “Best First Year Cadet”. This is given to one first year cadet per year. As a sophomore, I received the Superior Cadet award, which is given to one cadet per year (LET level) and it is the highest honor in JROTC a cadet can receive. Junior year was where I received the Reserve Officers Association Award which was given to myself and three other cadets from another school. Senior year was the highlight of JROTC for me. I was the Battalion Commander and I had the rank of C/LTC. By the end of the year, I was awarded with the Kenneth P. Forean Trophy, and the Kenneth P. Forean Scholarship which was $500. JROTC was my life in high school. I was commander of multiple teams, held many leadership positions, and I impressed my peers. If I had the opportunity, I would do it all over again.

Inspiration

Khyzyl Saleem. He's a graphic designer, and a concept artist for Electronic Arts. His designs are inspirational to me because of the way he gives character to the cars he designs, and also the style he gives them. His cars mostly consist of some futuristic parts, wide bodykitss, and worn and torn car designs.

Where does my inspiration come in however? It starts by creating something different. Its always about standing out, and doing something that no one else would think of doing. My interest in design is seeing how things would turn out, whether if it looks good or now. Its about exploring the different areas and principles of it, rather than sticking to one area. There may be flaws and mistakes along the road, but that only makes me better in understanding what happened and how I can fix it.
